The next stop on our trip was Szeged, where Chris has been living. It's a decent sized city/college town in the south of Hungary.
This was a house in Chris's hot family's neighborhood... the staruburst like pattern on the side of the house is actually a required component of the building code for this area, in an effort to capture a small village sort of feel.

This was at Chris's friend Don's house, where we went a few times to check e-mail (thanks Don).

This was an old church near where we were staying (with Chris's host family). It is supposedly the location where Szeged's paprika was perfected (and thus becasme famous... the tins of Hungarian Paprika you find in stores in the US are usually from Szeged).

The back section is the abbey/monastery... they make wine, beer, and a palinka there.

We went to this bar Kameleon the night before. It was pretty cool.

Szeged was devastated by a massive flood of the Tisza river in 1879; during the rebuilding process, many different architecture styles from around Europe were incorporated into the new buildings. This was a random building near the center of town...

This fountain was also there...

This walking street was filled with little shops...

So we stopped for coffee.

A statue in the square.

And a fountain.

A big garden with statues

City Hall...

Another building..

..and another..

This was the opera house/theatre.

We walked from there over towards the river, where this statue was...

The Tisza and one of the bridges spanning it...New Szeged is on the other side.

The other bridge spanning it...

Map of town... I think we're the red X by the river; my cousins host family lives over on the left side of the map...

The back side of the Art Museum...

Chris and Vicky...

Fountain in front of the art museum...

Art museum...

Looking back into town...

Walking out on the bridge...

Towers of the Dóm Cathedral... we'd head over in a minute.

The oustside of the Cathedral (back side)

Dömötör Tower, built in the 1200s.

Front side of church, with the Tower in the foreground. They were setting up bleachers for the summer festival.

The surrounding square. The clock in the wall there apparently had mechanized men that came out at some point during the day and rang a bell or somesuch... but we didn't see it.

Archway on the side door.

This place was just gorgeous:

Used to reach the loftier areas for cleaning, etc, I assume...

Vicky and I; the altar behind us was a Reliquary containing St. Gellert's arm bone and scepter.

Ah, the Grill Dupla...(this was back towards that square with the foutain on our walk to....

The synagogue...which was also beautiful..

Flowers outside the syagogue.

This is the same church near Chris's place... from the other side...

You can see the flood line (the dark streak @ about 2x the height of that lady) from 1879.

Back at the house. Chris's host sister Ildi and their dog Vacak (Hungarian for 'worthless' or lousy...) and Lowenbrau Original.

We were playing Rummy...

Back at the same park from before... Vicky and I took a walk while Chris was giving an English lesson one day.

Mormons!

Mineral water fountain outside of the Bath House:

Anna Fürdő, the Turkish Bath House we spent about 3 hours in. Super relaxing; Medicinal Baths, etc...

Another church

Looking down the street.

Coming back to the to that fountain again...

Chris's host mom, Mària, and Vicky gave Vacak at bath... Vicky wanted to play with him, but he was pretty dirty.

So then Vicky and Ildi gave the other dog, Spencer, a bath, but he was a bit large for the tub.

Ildi and her friends were there to smoke the hookah.

In Ildi's room, where we stayed while we were there

In the Living Room/Dining area... getting ready for the garden party.

Out in the back yard in a swing..

Another fine bottle of sör (beer)...

The fire pit... we're about to do a Serbian frying technique.

Chris put the neigbor kid to use... he wasn't bringing out the coldest of the beers, though...

Some of Atilla's grape vines, looking back into the house.

Wok.

Oil.

Vacak.

Dinner.

I love that last sequence of pictures, because it looks like we fried Vacak. Lol.
No, anyway, we had chicken. It was seasoned with a paprika based mix... so tasty.

Our contribution to the meal: Texas BBQ sauce and some Tabasco.

Then we played some blackjack.

Ildi was a riot...
