The
Wild World of Joe Végh
12/06/03 (12:44 AM):
Well, earlier today (yesterday, really, I guess) I had a nice time down at the SF Ferry Building, overlooking the Bay Bridge. Clive Cussler was in town for a book signing, which is why I was there, and it was fun. He's a pretty nice guy, too. In the few seconds he spent signing my books, he took the time to pose for a photo, but the red-eye reduction pre-flash on my camera confused the good doctor and I enough that the actual flash and capture came late... but oh well.... Anyway... it's late now... I'm going to bed.
12/05/03 (8:40 AM):
My greatest folly is that I ever tell people I'm working on these side-projects in the first place. I am a creature of habit. I am me. Soon. I promise you all again, soon.
06/23/03 (6:23 PM):
3...2...1...CHUG! Happy Beer Day!
06/13/03 (4:49 PM):
Ouch.... Yeah, I'm really working hard on that site update thing....No, really, I promise I am....Case in point, I just got back from a very entertaining (and tasty) tour of the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Factory . That's real work....I was...um...investigating the possibility of um.... Ok, so, In reality, I haven't done much on the whole site update thing. I guess I should mention (and use as my primary excuse) the fact that I went home for a week, and then installed a new motherboard in my computer. So, naturally, in the hierarchy of things, Diablo II comes before POVRay...so, I'm sorry, but all of you people are just going to have to wait until I get tired of playing video games and decide to sit back down and crank out the high quality ray-traced web content that you all so rightfully deserve. Have fun.
05/20/03 (8:29 PM):
While the rest of California watches the series finale of Buffy The Vampire Slayer down at the Parkway Theater, I'm at home, doing nothing important...(sorry Jeff...but happy b'day, tomorrow, btw)...
So, I just thought I'd mention the ol' site overhaul was put on hiatus so that I could study for finals, but they're over now, so after a brief sojourn to Texas next week, I'll probably get back to that as diligently as I possibly can for the most part. In the meantime... check out this pic of my wonderful cookie decorating abilities from a few Christmases ago!... The 5th Element IS gingerbread.
Yeah...
05/08/03 (12:55 PM):
Well, there hasn't been much progress made yet on the ol' site update...but I have been thinking about the design for my title page, and I think that it should turn out pretty good, if it ever gets finished. At any rate, my new phone from verizon should arrive in the next few days, so I'm excited about that. Other than that, I'll just be chillin' in the lab, awaiting the arrival of my new computer, and doing useless homework for useless classes....
05/05/03 (2:10 PM):
¡Felicidades, mis amigos, porque hoy es el Cinco de Mayo! Can't decide whether or not we should all celebrate because we're for Mexico, or because we're against France...? At any rate, a major site redesign is underway, ETA, um...somepoint in the future.... In other news, I just ordered a new phone and decided to switch my cellular provider over to Verizon, so I can finally give the 'ol heave-ho to Sprint after over 3 years of miserable service (and 3 miserable phones).
On yet another note: One of the main benefits of doing modelling work in the lab, I've decided, is that from time to time, things just have to run until they're finished, and the interim can be handily wasted piddling around, while still maintaing the façade of utility. Right now, for instance, I'm "hard at work", doing "complicated quantum chemical calculations" that "require my full attention." So, I'll be sitting here, awaiting the results and "closely monitoring the run status." Eventually, and hopefully sooner than later, I will get a new, very fast computer here in the lab, and this "wasted time" will be cut short by several orders of magnitude...Until then, though, let the good times roll!
Well, have a better one....
05/01/03 (1:38 PM):
Well, May is here already. Hard to believe that April came and went so quickly... Anyway, I spent the last few nights going to see They Might Be Giants in SF for all three of their shows, and must say that I'm very satisfied by the whole experience. Kind of makes me miss going to shows with my buddies at the venues in Texas, although The Great American Music Hall certainly has its charm. I wasted some time this morning looking for an article in the engineering library, only to find that it's out to be mended...and will be returning in April...of 2004...I guess the rest of the day will be spent thinking about how much I wish I were at home in bed, or whether or not I'll be going to the midnight showing of X-men 2 tonight....
At any rate, I'll continue to be tired.
04/25/03 (4:09 PM):
So, I've moved over to my new account on Berkeley's webdisk service, which should give me about five times the storage that I had, as well as remote access (attbi wouldn't let me in from outside their IP). Anyway, I'm playing around with HTML in the lab now, so I can really waste my Friday away. I'll catch you later.
03/28/03 (5:50 PM):
Well, here's some pictures that I finally got developed. They're from my family Christmas as well as from sailing on SF bay at the end of last month. Enjoy.
01/25/03 (1:25 AM):
First, let's all note the creepy coincidence between the date and time of this post. Secondly, after hanging out tonight with mis compadres, I've got a quiz for you all. There's no right or wrong answer, the only trick is you actually have to step up and take the test. Let me mention that I haven't actually completed it myself, and, if you know my likes and dislikes well, you can probably understand why one of the most 'common' items on the list are the ones I have yet to conquer (hint: it has to do with my affinity for a certain tropical fruit). But, without further ado, here is the quiz:
Rank the following sandwiches in order of tastiness:
1.) Peanut Butter and Honey
2.) Peanut Butter and Banana
3.) Peanut Butter and Banana and Honey
4.) Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Crème
5.) Peanut Butter and Bacon
6.) Peanut Butter and BACOS®
7.) Peanut Butter and Pickle (Kosher Dill, preferably)
8.) Peanut Butter and Pickled Okra
9.) Peanut Butter and Jelly
10.) Peanut Butter and Raisin (with or without honey)
Bonus Question:
Of the listed sandwiches, what kind am I eating right now?
Anyway, If you're man (or woman) enough to step up to the challenge, take the
quiz seriously and
get back to
me with your ranking.
After you take the quiz (or, if you're just curious), check out my personal ranking (and answer to the bonus question) here, keeping in mind that I'm not fond of bananas (although I promise to try 2 & 3 as soon as I can, out of fairness of the challenge, and the fact that I am man enough to take my own challenge).
Well, it is time for bed, I believe.
01/20/03 (5:24 PM):
Happy New Year! Well, my insane prelim exams are over. I guess that means the rest of the semester should be less hectic by comparison. In other news, not much else has been going on ... class starts tomorrow, and I guess I'll begin to get down to business getting my research under way and whatnot. I think I'll be devoting some free time here in the next few weeks to try and fix my computer, but also to writing some other things, and getting them posted up here. Catch you all later.
12/03/02 (11:56 PM):
Bum bum bummmmmmmm....... "Oh no, something's terribly wrong... Joe's updated the site within a weeks time!" Yes, I decided that if I wasn't going to do homework again I should probably do something more productive than play Heroes IV or Metroid Fusion all night again. Fortunately for you all, that means MORE WEB CONTENT!
So, what's first on the agenda.... well, at one point, I had a link to the font I use for headings on this site, but I must have taken it down when I revamped after the fiasco w/ my former roommate (sorry about that, again, Cam ;-) So, for everyone who doesn't have it, you can grab it here.
Ok, Second (and this is the coolest part), I've added a new page to house various writings. This is even better because I'm posting a brand new story that I just wrote in the past few hours, as well as some selected poems from the big collection that I have. Of course, my other story that I wrote for this site (see the 01/03/02 entry) will still be up there, although I will probably move it to a new directory, so if you have it bookmarked, it might move. Well, I've some work to do getting these new pages ready, so be sure to check them out, and I will catch you later. Oh, and the first part of the new story gets kind of intense, but it does have a point, so keep that in mind as you read.
Peace out.
11/30/02 (2:44 PM):
So, once again I have failed you all
in trying to keep this site updated. But, alas, that's just how the
cookie crumbles. You should be happy to know, though, that I have still
been around, and trying to get some things written in order to eventually post
them here. I've been out here at UC Berkeley now for almost an
entire semester, and have become fairly settled at my new place in Richmond,
CA. I just recently moved my site over to the AT&T Broadband server,
since it lacks those annoying pop-up ads and seems to be a bit quicker load
(that, and geocities dropped their ftp access a while back, which made
uploading things a pain). Plus, it was free with my cable modem service, so I
might as well be using it. The only drawback that I've found so far is
that their server doesn't seem happy with me pointing everyone to a directory
of pictures, so the pics of my trip out here and whatnot (see the last entry)
are still up on the geocities server until I have time to crank out a nice
page with thumbnails, links, etc.
Well, I've got to run and put together part of a presentation for my kinetics class next week, so I'll be wasting some time in AutoCAD trying to live up to my "Maxwell Prize for Best Presentation Graphics" at Loyola Merrymount University's Business Ethics Fortnight back in 2001. I have, however, restricted myself to not wasting as much time as I did for my Unit Ops lab on drying of a sponge. Although making your own textures for rendering is fun, I don't think my apartment will be as conducive to finding an actual catalytic plate reactor as it was to finding an actual sponge to use as a source for a bump map.
Hope everyone had as good a Thanksgiving as I did. I'll be back in a while, I'm sure.
07/16/02 (4:59 PM):
Made a trip out to California last week to find a place to stay while I'm off getting my PhD. I took quite a few pictures on the way home, which are up here. Aside from that, I'm just hanging out in Corpus Christi for another month. I got a new car for graduation, as well. I guess that's about it.
Later.
04/17/02 (2:43 AM):
Ah, the 2 month update. Well, what's new. I've accepted to Berkeley for Graduate school in Chemical Engineering. I'll start their PhD program in the fall. I started a new short story tonight, and I'll post it up here as soon as it gets done.
Well, I guess it's off to bed. Finished a huge, huge project (Senior Design) just yesterday with a spectacular ending stretch of 30 hours work with virtually no break.. Weighed in at 603 pages.
Anyhow, I will catch you all later.
02/17/02 (1:25 AM):
So, it's been quite a while since I've updated my site. Oh well, I guess I've just been busy. Mostly this is due to me playing lots and lots of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. I've beaten it 3 times now w/ 100% completion (with 3 characters) and there's really no end in site to its hold on my free time. I guess that might be considered sad to some...oh well. In other news, Cam's personal site is back up, and Ted's site is now back up here.
I promise not to stay away for so long this time, and so I will attempt to catch everyone again soon. Later.
01/19/02 (7:47 PM):
I was correct in my estimations. I overstepped several boundaries. I have given my sincerest apologies for those transgressions. I currently stand at the gates of a cloudy future and hope I will not mourn the loss of a friend once I pass through them. For those of you who came here looking for something else, you won't find it. It's down and locked away in my personal files from whence it came, and never should have left.
I hope you will all still continue to visit from time to time, just to see
what I have decided to do.
01/19/02 (3:50 PM):
I found out last night that I got into Berkeley's Chemical Engineering PhD program. I'm still not sure if I'll end up there, but needless to say, I'm pretty excited about it. I think my life may be getting a bit more hectic since I told Cam about this site last night, and he didn't seem to be too happy with me this morning. I think he's over reacting, and I didn't expect it to be this big of a deal for him. I guess I just misjudged or went past some boundaries I shouldn't have. We'll just have to see what develops.
01/17/02 (1:30 AM):
Just doing some
retooling of the site. I decided to move all of my personal stuff over
to this wing, and keep the stuff about Cam
separate.
01/03/02 (11:42 PM):
As I
mentioned once, I'll also use this site to post whatever I feel like
posting. I do like to do a bit of creative writing now and then, and
today I wrote this story. Read it if you
feel like it. Peace out, yo.
